It is now known to all that trees play an important role in the ecosystem by maintaining ecological balance. Trees hold the soil in which they grow and as a result the fertile top soil is held securely, otherwise it may get drained or washed away in rains and floods. Trees are the natural habitat for many wildlife species. A micro-habitat formed by planting trees can create a green and natural area, and a micro-climate that is healthy for all life forms.

An awareness is created at all parts of the society that tree plantation is the key to save our planet earth and our lives. The path too achieve this objective is to involve the young generation, that is, mainly the students in such activities. They have the spirit and vigor to make the earth greener and reduce all kinds of pollution. Accordingly, the AICTE has directed different Universities/colleges to plant saplings between 1st and 15th August, 2019. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT), WB took this opportunity to take a drive for tree plantation on the 9th of August, 2019 in its beautiful Haringhata Campus at Nadia district. Moreover, the most important aspect of this initiative is  tree plantation was carried out by the new incumbents of the University.

These programmes can give the message that tree plantation is an important activity to make our environment greener and cleaner. The educational institutions must be given priorities regarding tree plantation. The AICTE has also taken this drive in order to involve the colleges and universities in this initiative.

The Hon’ble HRD Minister Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal “Nishank” has launched a new campaign “One Student One Tree” on the 20th July. This initiative is in line with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s idea of a green and healthy environment. This initiative need support of our young dynamic students and teachers. As a responsibility towards mother nature and contribution to this initiative, AICTE recommend every institute to carry out a plantation drive on any suitable day from 1st to 15th August. Diverse species of trees should be planted with focus on minimum water consumption in an eco-friendly manner. Also, this trees should have suitable utility in the nearby area. Each Student should plant at least 1 tree. Either students or suitable person from the institute should look after this planted trees for initial 1 to 2 years. Institutes will be awarded based on suitable criteria for this plantation drive on 5th September (Teachers' Day) by Honorable HRD Minister. In the near future, further information will be demanded by AICTE regarding survival rate of these trees. The AICTE urges to make “One Student One Tree” initiative a huge success.
